A PIECE OF HEAVEN

IRPINIA

SUMMONTE - The village that grew around the Angevin Tower

Thou from the top of yonder antique tower… Leopardi's famous verses resonating in the mind in front of the natural spectacle presenting from the top of the Angevin tower in Summonte.

MORRA DE SANCTIS - Nel nome del grande Francesco

E’ una testa di lupo, hirpus, l’elemento decorativo che caratterizza le ceramiche della necropoli di Piano Cerasulo.

ROCCA SAN FELICE - The stone village around the longobard castle

The stone tower mutilated by time, still seems to guard, protective, over the hamlet that runs all around the sides of the hill ruling over the Ansanto valley.

Lapio- The hamlet of Fiano, favorite residence of the Filangieri nobles

A small hilltop village with a favorable position. Not, for once, for its military needs, but for a thriving agriculture, which over the centuries had its strength in viticulture.

CALITRI, SMELL OF BREAD IN THE HAMLET

The “cart wheels” weigh six kilos, but the most common size is two kilos. Round loaves, of wheat and soft flour, risen with sourdough and baked in wood –fired oven : this is the bread which has made Calitri famous. The “cart wheels” weigh six kilos, but the most common size is two kilos. Castelvetere on the Calore - The town of the ancient castle

Keeps the synthesis of its history in the name. A medieval town, built around a castle, the Castrum vetere, an ancient castle so: this is the genesis of Castelvetere, on the Calore (“of Calore“ until 1950) because the great irpinian river flows through the valley below Mount Tuoro, rising at 750 meters high on its slopes.

MONTELLA- Where the rivers born

Montella is not only the heart of PGI chestnuts production bearing its name, recognised as Irpinia typical product. It is also a land of springs of water.

CAIRANO - The hamlet on the cliff dominating the valley

A small town. With its name linked forever to an ancient culture that can be traced to a historical emigration from the lands on the Adriatic to those found on the paths towards the Tyrrhenian.

AVELLA, THE CITY OF NUTS

Roasted and shredded, they appeared as an ingredient in different recipes of the “De re coquinaria” of Apicius, the famous roman chef who lived between the 1st  and the 2nd century a.D and recommended the use of “nuts of Avella”, in other words the nuts.
