Where to swim in Ischia. Little guide for non conventional swimmers

We often say: island “equal” sea. If the island is such (but each island is different from the others), the sea is neve equal to itself. Perspectives and expectations change, the position of the sun, the microclimates, the landscapes, the grainy sand, the geological characteristics of the beaches, the ravines, the bays, the coves, the lidos and so on. Therefore, if you have most likely chosen to bath along the coast of Ischia, then follow us : in the following pages we will give you several indications, with pictures and short personalised descriptions of the places you can reach by land or with little boat. The map is punctuated like a clock without the hours and minutes hand, in a day, from the sunrise until dark night, but it is not exhaustive, it could not be. We did not include the caves, the majestic backdrops and the shallows because we recommend you to get there with experienced divers or expert guides. And if you are on a boat, remember to always respect the safety distance from the boot top and to access if only from the corridors indicated by the buoys.

Rocks at the foot of the Castle

The sun from the sea behind Vivara illuminates the cliffs with golden sparkles at the foot of the Castello Aragonese, along the “bridge” linking it to the big island.

Petrelle, Maronti

Petrelle, Maronti

I am taking the risk. From the last hairpin bends, on the road leading to Maronti coast,

Varulo, spiaggia delle monache

Varulo, Spiaggia delle monache

It is the right time. I am reaching the beach. I am looking at the sun. It reflects on the waves of the sea to recognise itself.

Spiaggia di Citara

Citara

5 pm. Here I am in Citara, house of Poseidon, one of the favourite foreigners’ destination.

Cartaromana Beach

I chose the way passing by the cemetery. It reminds me my teenage years.

Spiaggia dell' Olmitello, Maronti

Olmitello, Maronti

I am reaching the extreme south of the island, where there is the most exuberant beach:

Litorale Casamicciola Lacco Ameno

Casamicciola and Lacco Ameno coastlines

I am walking from Casamicciola to Lacco Ameno.

Cava dell'isola

Cava dell’isola

It is the temple of the sunset and it reminds me that I would like to go to the beach.

Beach of Pescatori, Mandra

The round shape of Vivara, the walls and the towers of the Castle in the background take form in the hands of the children playing with the sand and seawater.

Scannella

Scannella

You can get there from Sant’Angelo, by taxi boat, for the price of 7-10 euros.

Fumarole, Maronti

Fumaroles, Maronti

I am waiting for the northwest wind: if the winds blow and make the sea surface vibrate with endless waves…

Spiaggia della Chiaia

Chiaia

The fine sand accompanies the way in the quiet blue lagoon, up to the cliff dividing and protecting it from the open sea.

Spiaggia degli Inglesi (English Beach)

In the centre of the beautiful hamlet of Sant’Alessandro, an arrow indicates the way to get to Spiaggia degli Inglesi.

Scogliera di Zaro, Punta Caruso

Zaro’s Cliff, Punta Caruso

You need to pass through Zaro wood to reach the cliff – non cliff:

Fumarole, Maronti

Cava Grado

The breeze at the entrance of Cava Grado is penetrating into the reeds with its slow pace. It is a music.

Baia di Sorgeto

Sorgeto

By night, of course! During the day you can go by boat.

Scarrupata

Scarrupata

I am looking at the Scarrupata, from the punt. I took it from the little pier of Ischia Ponte. Tabula rasa.

San Montano

San Montano

The heat is hiding between pine needles. Cicadas are already singing.

San Francesco

Saint Francis (San Francesco)

The dark volcanic rocks of the promontory of Zaro,

Did you know that ...
